Wonderful Wacky Water Critters

Johnny Darter

Watch how this tiny member of the perch family moves and you can see how it got its name. The Johnny darter likes to sit quietly in one place and then zip with great speed after a dinner of small insects. Small black wwws on their sides make identifying Johnny darters easy. If your fish is very brightly colored then it is probably a male ready to mate. He will only build his nest under rocks in clear, unpolluted streams, so we must be careful to keep his home clean.
